Although Fort McMurray was built and developed in order to house and provide for workers in the oil patch, the area has flourished into an amazing family-oriented community. The urban service area enjoys great recreational facilities, some of the best sports facilities in Canada and an abundance of walking trails that double-up as cross-country skiing trails in the winter.
Facilities such as, Syncrude Athletic Park and MacDonald Island, help many families in the community maintain a healthy and active life. Macdonald Island, the largest community recreation and leisure centre in Canada, has a plethora of on-ice sports facilities including hockey and curling rinks, indoor running tracks, a baseball stadium, arenas for live music and a top-level golf course. Spend the summer outdoors, like many locals, by casting a rod at the Gregoire Lake Provincial Park or learn about the history of the oil industry in Fort Mac at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre. There’s always something to see or do in Fort Mac, even if you just wish to stay at home and spend quality time with those you love most.
Communities such as Parsons North and Abasand Heights are growing communities that feature a large amount of newer homes. Whereas, neighbourhoods like Thickwood and Timberlea have plenty of more mature homes and condos, which suit the needs of empty-nesters and first-time buyers.
Whichever community’s real estate you decide to browse, expect to find plenty of homes for sale that will meet the needs of most families. When you find a home that you love, contact us and we’ll help you navigate the long and winding path to home ownership.
Despite commonly being referred to as a city, Fort McMurray is actually an ‘urban service area’ that is located in Northern Alberta. Just because it lacks the correct designation, doesn’t mean that Fort McMurray lacks any services that anybody would expect of a modern Canadian city though. In fact, Fort McMurray has it all. An ever-improving school system, top quality services and great recreational opportunities that help make the Northern community a great place to live for the 61,000-plus residents.
Situated along the banks of the scenic Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers, Fort McMurray is built on, and surrounded by, natural boreal forest. Being close to and accessing Alberta’s Northern nature is easy, especially in communities like Parsons North, where there are many walking trails and local parks that are interspersed with residential housing units.
Largely due to being the epicenter of Canada’s oil industry, Fort McMurray has a large, diverse population. Despite the brief economic downturn in 2015-16 that was caused by the low-cost of oil, skilled workers from both East and West Coasts have flocked to Fort McMurray for high-paying work in the oil and gas industry. After travelling to and from their original hometowns, many of those workers moved themselves and their families to Fort McMurray to take advantage of the quality of life.
Some of the top recreational facilities and amenities that aid the quality of life include a slew of entertainment choices and great sports facilities including multiple golf courses and the Syncrude Athletic Park. Fort Mac is home to the largest community recreation and leisure centre in Canada. Opening in 1978, the MacDonald Island facility has undergone a number of expansions over the years. The Suncor Community Leisure Centre, which opened in 2009, offers two NHL-sized ice rinks, an eight-laned curling rink, indoor running tracks, a fitness facility, squash courts, an indoor playground and facilities for meetings and banquets. Inside of Shell Place, there’s a baseball stadium, an indoor turf field, a badminton facility and a professional training center for elite sportspersons and athletes. On the outskirts of the leisure complex is the Miskanaw Golf Club, a large stadium and numerous trails.
